Star Destroyer City

I'm about one movie too late, but I really liked the Jakku planet idea in The Force Awakens. A junk planet filled with relics from earlier Star Wars movies. I wished we'd spent more time there, whether it was necessary or not :). I wanted to give my own take on the junkyard planet inspired by modern shipyards where cargo vessels are taken and deconstructed piece by piece. As a lengthy and profitable process for something as large as a star destroyer, why wouldn't small scavenging operations popup and build themselves into little towns?

The Final - I removed the Sand Crawler and Rey as they were really fighting the sense of scale and taking away from the focus on the Star Destroyer as a destination - trying too hard to have everything in my painting.

I got about this far before I felt the composition needed to open up a bit.

The rough sketch where I lay down over the 3D base what I want for colors and atmophere. I add in all of the additional compositional elements that I don't bother with in 3D or didn't think of. For personal work, I rarely stick absolutely to the sketch.

I've been trying to work 3D into my work more and more. Since I didn't really address lighting in my initial sketch, this was really helpful.

The sketch that started it all.
